  • Uno
  • A known model of Fiat car. Designed by Giorgio Giugiaro to replace the Fiat 127, the Uno was released in January 1983, and in the same year was awarded 'Car of the Year'. Initial models were powered by 903cc (pushrod), 1116cc (SOHC) and 1301cc (SOHC) engines and had three or five doors. It received much praise for its interior space and low fuel consumption (due to a low weight and low drag factor of just 0.34).

A major facelift was completed for the second series, released in September 1989. This introduced a revised bodyshell (new bonnet and grille and rear hatch) with a lower drag coefficient of 0.30, a new dashboard and numerous smaller improvements both in design and in build quality.

Like the X1/9 before it, the Uno was a Fiat that was launched with its project code-name (or at least part of it). The Uno spearheaded a major development programme within the Fiat group, and as such, was developed under the code-name of Tipo Uno (Type 1). In fact, the Panda had originally been labelled Tipo Zero (Type 0), indicating a blank-sheet design, and the launch of Tipo Uno was to be followed by that of Tipo Quattro (Type 4), Tipo Due (Type 2) and Tipo Tre (Type 3), in that order. Incidentally, Fiat's naming policy for these models were a little quirky: while Tipo Uno had been launched as the Uno, Tipo Due was launched simply as the Tipo.
