Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6 (1971), Orange County International Raceway will conduct the richest and largest competition held for drag racing's notorious funny cars.
-
More than eighty of the nations top ranked drivers will race for $50,000 in the fifth annual Manufacturers Funny Car Championships.
-
The Manufacturers designation is derived from the way the competing cars are grouped by "make." The thirty-two quickest Ford, Plymouth, Chevrolet, and Dodge funny cars from Friday's qualifying race three non-eliminative rounds Saturday evening to establish a winning "make." The two quickest drivers in the team competition race a fourth round to determine the champion driver of the event.
-
The names emblazoned on the sides of these colorful, 220 mph missles are as imaginative and ominous as the contest in which they're entered. Ramchargers, Blue Max, Assassination, Jungle Jim, Warlord, snake, Mongoose, and Midnight Skulker are just a few of the monikers that grace the flanks of these 1600 horsepower facsimiles of American production cars.
-
Qualifying will take place Friday, November 5, from noon to 11:00 p.m. Gates open Staurday at 1:30 p.m. for time trials with a special fireworks display kicking off the race program at 6:00 p.m.
