The Lotus
Seven began as an uprated version of the successful Lotus Mark 6.
Its introduction
was put off until time was found in the busy racing schedule.
The chassis is
a simplified version of the Eleven.
It has a steel
tube frame with stressed aluminum panels in the undertray and sides, and
aluminum bodywork, ( later with fiberglass nose and fenders ).
A variety of
engines ( BMC, Ford, and Coventry Climax ) were used, and many upgrades
were made over the 16 years of production.
Low and light,
with incredible handling, it is very quick, and a winner of innumerable
club races.
Lotus discontinued
production after the introduction of the steel backbone framed, fiberglass
bodied, Series 4 ( Type 60 ).
Licensed replicas
are still in production today as a variant of the Series 3 Seven, called
the Caterham Seven.
