Rob's Beetle page number 10

After taking a break in December and most of January, we started on the interior.

January 24th, 1999, this is the best of four seats. This seat "only" had one hole - right over a broken spring!

This is the back of the rear seat. It had been "recovered" with a grey rag/blanket that looked more like thin carpet padding than a blanket.

Here's the front seats after rebuilding and recovering. I used the best components from the four seats to build two good ones. The seat covers are the cheaper, snap-on kind. They are designed to go over the original seat covers, but I managed to use them as the only covers. I used a few nylon wire ties to help keep the cover down in places. The seats feel much better, and look great! I was even able to salvage two of the plastic side covers - the inside ones on both seats. Buying and installing the outside covers will come later.

Here's the rear seat after rebuilding and recovering. You can see a bit of the wrinkled headliner too...

February 1st. Built and installed a rear well cover for the interior. Amazing the difference a little plywood, padding, and vinyl will make. Kinda hard to see, but the cover is in place in this picture.

February 16th. All day interior redo (oh my aching back...). Insulated the well behind the back seat, installed padding and carpet, installed new seat belts, and replaced the clutch crossbar (with the hook that connects to the clutch cable). The hook part of the clutch crossbar was worn about halfway thru. This shot was taken February 18, after my back had time to get a bit better! Compare these pictures with ones a few pages back.

And that's the car so far. All that's left now are the small items like light lens, the front trunk, etc.
