It's after Christmas now because the steering wheel and fuzzy dice were presents! This shot gives you a good look at the tar stuff all over the interior. The black on the kick panel and tunnel is not carpet...

By now we have done enough work to finally get the Bug inspected. We had to make numerous repairs to to the very-botched-up electrical system (ground wires and hot wires were crossed, wires melted, etc - it was a mess). We finally got all the lights, turn signals, horn, etc working. Thanks to some very helpful folks from the rec.autos.makers.vw.aircooled newsgroup and the Bently manual the wiring nightmare was finally fixed. The next big task was cleaning the tar out of the car.

Tar removal in progress. It's now January 1998. We tried many things to help remove the tar, but finally wound up with Simple Green cleaner, steel wool, and lots of elbow grease.

February 1998. The tar is finally gone.
