THE STORY
It was going to be
another long stint of fending for myself and my
two kids without the help of my wife. The lure of the big city
to build up enough money to pay off some long awaited, and large
(getting larger) bills was not as easy to push away anymore.
Our family was a one car family and that was going to have to
change
if I would be expected to be productive in those two months. You
see, the
roles of the bread winner and the caregiver are reversed. I am
the caregiver,
and my wife provides. She provides quite well . My love for
mopars,
mainly chargers, was in full swing. With only around $500 or $600
to spare on a second car, I wanted toget an early '70's dart. One
that
I could work on if needed, and stay true to my loyalty to the
mopar
family. The end of the first month of my wife being away came and
I was
near insanity with boredom and the lack of freedom. On a cold
weekend in
early february 1998, I joined my wife and began the hunt! Armed
with a
classifieds, an auto trader, and about a half a grand, I searched
day and night.
Many of the qualified ads for darts, dusters, and demons had
either
sold or were asking too much for their condition. It seemed my
search was
coming to an abrupt end. Through all this, an ad of a 1974
charger kept
on grabbing my attention. It was a bit out of our price range
but, the
ads for cheaper mopars had run out! With the knowledge of my
desire
to own a charger, my wife agreed to take a look the car. as I
always said
"a little arm-twisting never hurt anyone". Throughout
the time we
spent examining the car, my enthusiasum to drive this car away
was
growing by the minute. After much dickering and financial
arangements
were made, the car was mine! uh.... ours. The body needed a
little work
and the motor ran suprisingly well . The interior is all original
and
in very good shape. In the year that has passed, the bodywork
has been completed and it has had a new coat of paint to cover
the faded,
oxidized original paint job. A little oil, a few brake pads, and
extra
highlight decals have been all that I have done to get it the way
you see it now. We are looking forward to a great season of car
shows.
Can't wait to get more of those admiring gazes as I drive in the
new cruise-in's the spring and summer of 1999, and beyond.
