I got my hands on a brand new Trac Lok from fellow Jeeper and club member, Seth "Airborn" Barrand. I needed something for my Dana 35c and this was just the ticket for my budget.Ken "Cool Man K" Bozych help with the installation. He also, got a Trac Lok from Seth. Both Ken and I have been running open diffs, front and rear. We both felt a HUGE difference once we hit the trail.
The installation was very easy.
1. Put Jeep on jack stands are lug nuts are loosened.
2. Remove rear tires and brake drums.
3. Drain axle and remove axle cover.
4. Loosen bolts that holds the center pin in the middle of the carrier. This large pin keeps the axles from pushing in and letting the infamous c-clips fall during normal use.
5. Remove the large pin completely, then push each axle shaft in slightly. The c-clips should fall out. If not, remove them by hand.
6. Remove both axle shafts carefully and set them aside.
7. Loosen the four bolts that hold the bearing caps for the carrier. Loosen them but, do not remove them completely. Now, pull on the carrier to start removing it. It will pop out and the bearing caps will prevent it from dropping on the floor or your head. That would leave a mark.
8. With the carrier loose, remove the bearing caps and carrier.
9. Clean out the axle housing.10. Install the bearings onto the new Trac Lok. Becareful not to damage them.
11. Remove the Ring gear from the old carrier and install it on the new Trac Lok.Ken "Handy Man K" Bozych installing the ring gear 11. Now you simply reverse the procedure. After the new Trac Lok is installed, you have to check the backlash. Shim, as necessary, to achieve the proper backlash.
12. Make sure the bearing caps are torqued to factory specs. Make sure to add the special additive needed for Limited Slip Differentials, when refilling the axle.
An easy job to complete yourself. I was surprised at how easy it really was.
