The Opel Vectra A page

VECTRA A Home page

This page is dedicated to the Opel Vectra A and especially the sport models of it. Most of the pictures are from the net, so you might find even you own car featured here.

Opel Vectra A was introduced in autumn 1988 and the first model year was 1989 when it replaced the Opel Ascona C. There was a face lift in model year 1993 and the last ones were sold in 1996 when the Vectra B was introduced.

Opel Vectra A was called Chevrolet Vectra in Brazil and Vauxhall Cavalier mk3 in the UK. If you know this car had a different name, please inform me!

Most of my information is considering the models sold in Finland, and I have noticed, that the models vary a lot in different countries. For example the hatchback model wasn't available in all counties at all, or with all features, like as a GT.

1989-1992

This was the first model of Opel Vectra. It replaced Opel Ascona in autumn of 1988, the first official model year is 1989. In the UK Vauxhall didn't change the name of the car and there the name remained as Vauxhall Cavalier, which was also the name of the British version of Opel Ascona. The engines started from 1.6S with 82 hp to 2.0i 16V with 150 hp in Vectra 2000 16V. At least here in Finland the most common model seems to be 1.6S GL, which was the basic model. It had several models, like GL, GLS, CD, 4x4, GT, 2000 and 2000 16V, which are described in the following tables. The table most propably contains errors, because it's composed just by me. If you find something needing correction, please inform!

Model Engines Remarks
GL 1.6S 82hp, 1.6i 75hp, 1.7D 57hp, 1.8i 90hp, 2.0i 115hp The basic model. Silver grille and grey bumpers.
Diamond 2.0i 115hp Model year 1992.
GLS 1.6S 82hp, 1.6i 75hp, 1.6i 82hp, 1.8i 90hp, 2.0i 115hp More accessories than in GL.
CD 2.0i 115hp More luxury than GLS
GL 4x4 2.0i 115hp, 2.0i 129hp 4WD model. It's called GL, but has much more accessories than a normal GL like sport seats and 3-spoke steering wheel and neck rests in back seat. It has also body colored bumpers, but not the black plastic between tail lights. This in fact can be used to identify a 4x4. Until 1990 available also with the GT 129 hp engine.
GT 2.0i 115hp, 2.0i 129hp Sport version. Black grille, sport seats etc. Until 1990 129 hp (without catalytic converter).
2000 16V 2.0i 16V 150hp Sportiest version of the older model. Available also with 4WD.

Photos of different models

This is a Vectra having the standard grille. It was colored silver despite the car's color. This car has the body colored bumpers.
This is the hatchback-model of the older Vectra A. Notice the silver grille in a blue car and the grey bumpers, which indicate that this is a basic model (GL). In better models the bumpers were colored with the car's color.
Vectra GT. In GT-model the grille is the same as in normal models, but it's colored black instead of silver. The bumpers are also with body color. This picture has a GT Hatchback.
This picture is showing a Vauxhall Cavalier GSi, but the sport models of Vauxhall were made by Opel in Germany. So this picure is representing the Vectra 2000. In Vectra 2000 the grille is completely different than in the other models, it has an opening in the middle. Vectra 2000 had also spoilers around the car and there was a model called Vectra 2000 16V available, which had the 20XE 16V engine with 150 hp. It was also available with 4WD.
This is a highly modified Vauxhall Cavalier.

1993-1995

For model year 1993 (in autumn 1992) there was a face lift to the Vectra. Opel introduced a new grille, which looked a lot like the old Vectra 2000 grille, but it was different with a tilt and the emblem in the middle. Also all lights (front and rear) were now new and different and bumpers were newly designed. The grille was now in body color in all models.

Vauxhall Cavalier mkIII

General Motors brand in the UK is Vauxhall. The cars are identical to Opels, only difference being the name. The Vectra A was still called Cavalier as a Vauxhall, like the previous models, which were called Ascona as Opel. Vauxhall manufactured the basic models of Cavalier in the UK, but the sport models were imported to the UK from Germany and were built in the Opel factory. Vauxhall Cavalier won the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) series in 1995 with John Cleland as the driver. The Vectra B is called Vectra also as a Vauxhall.

Chevrolet Vectra

This is the Brazilian version of the Vectra. It's identical to Opel, the only difference being the badges and of course the brand. It was available only as a 4d sedan. Only the newer model of Vectra A was sold as a Chevrolet.

Opel Calibra / Vauxhall Calibra / Holden Calibra

Opel Calibra 16V
Opel Calibra is actually the 2d sports coupe model of Opel Vectra A, just like Opel Manta was the sports coupe model of Opel Ascona B (RWD). And just like Manta, Calibra outlived Vectra A. The models share everything but the body styling. The chassis, engines, wheels, dashboard are same than in Vectra A. The equivalent models are Vectra GT and Calibra, Vectra 2000 and GT 16V and Calibra 16V (-1994), Vectra 2.0i 16V Sport and Calibra 16V (1995-), Vectra V6 and Calibra V6 and Vectra Turbo 4x4 and Calibra Turbo 4x4. These models share all features with each other. The Calibra was manufactured longer than Vectra A, and the last ones were built here in Finland, in Valmet Automotive car factory in Uusikaupunki. The Calibra was also sold as Vauxhall and Holden, those models were also built by Opel in Germany and Valmet Automotive in Finland.

Saab 900 and 9-3

Saab 9-3
The current Saab 9-3 and the last 900 are also based on Opel Vectra A. They used the Vectra floor and chassis to build the new Saab faster and cheaper, because Saab is also owned by General Motors like Opel. Also the V6 models use the Opel V6 also used in Vectra and Calibra. Interesting point is that all the Saab Convertibles are built by Valmet Automotive in Finland in the same line than Calibras, and the cars shared the same chassis and in V6 models also the engine!

Trivia

In finnish car magazines the Vectra A did very well in all comparison tests it attended. It won most of them, but once came second, but the winner was the Saab 900, which is based on the Vectra A! In Finland the police has used at least one Vectra GT for partolling the motorways (it was a red sedan BTW). Vectra A was also used as a police car in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and Cavalier in the UK. It was also quite common car as a taxi in Athens, Greece. In the TV there were Cavaliers in the British series "The Cracker", where "Jane Penhaligon" drove metallic blue Cavalier hatchbacks (there were both models, the older and the newer).

On the following curves there are several Vectra engines plotted on same graph. It's easy to compare e.g. the Ecotec 16V and C20XE DOHC 16V engines with this one.
